Depends what your natural colour is. For lighter hair colours, I would suggest dying the bottom/tips. For darker colours, I suggest dying the top, and leaving the tips the original colour. Both of these should create a more dramatic effect.

let's see.. it really depends on what colour your hair is. if copper is the lighter colour, then dye the tips copper. if you natural hair colour is the lighter colour, then dye the top.
this fading effect is really nice, especially when it's done properly.
