Go a day without washing it. Brush it out, all the oils you get from sleeping on it can either make it really soft or really greasy and teased, so make sure to brush it out. If it's greasy there's basically powder for hair that you can put in there to take away the moisture. Use a 2 inch barrel and wrap your hair around it going at an angle like this( / )to create curls. Flip your head over and use your fingers under your hair to lift your roots and relax the curls.

Wrap sections of your hair around your fingers and just keep massaging the roots under your head. It's awesome, I remember bedhead used to make a less expensive version but it looks like they don't sell it anymore.
